Obituary

Old Town - William Cole Winter, 90, died peacefully at his home on March 25, 2024. He was born January 22, 1934, in Washington, DC, the son of Harold Lewie Winter and Florence Lillian (Cole) Winter. Bill served in the 9th Infantry Division "Old Reliables," stationed in Germany during the Korean War, where he served as an Armory Specialist. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1962. After serving his country, Bill earned his B.S. in Forestry from the University of Maine at Orono. He was employed as a cartographer at James W. Sewall Company, drawing maps by hand. He spent his entire career working for Sewall Company and eventually retired as their head draftsman. Bill married Janice Tinkham on June 22, 1963, and they started their family the following year, celebrating the birth of their daughter, Christine, December 6, 1964. A son, Erik, was born on April 19, 1968. Bill was an avid craftsman, making his own knives, and sportsman, spending hours fishing and hunting. He had a passion for firearms and owned an impressive array of rifles and pistols, some going as far back as the Revolutionary War. His favorite place in the world was the family camp on Pushaw Lake. He was blessed to have been able to drive out to camp regularly until just a few weeks before his passing. He was a quiet, intelligent, and caring man, known for his wit and artistic ability. He was a good husband, father, and friend to those lucky enough to know him. A true "Mainah," he lived his life independently and on his own terms. Bill is predeceased by his loving wife, Janice and his sister, Carlista Winter. He is survived by a daughter, Christine W. Comeau and her husband Alan of Hermon; a son, Erik C. Winter of Biddeford; and two grandchildren, Haley B. Comeau and her husband Allan Davis of Bangor, and Austin W. Comeau of Orono. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 4 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main Street, Old Town. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Animal Orphanage, P.O. Box 565, Orono, ME 04473.
