Obituary

Hampden – Velma Mayhew, 87, passed peacefully on January 15, 2025, at Northern Light Eastern Maine medical center in Bangor. She was born Velma Julia Young on January 26, 1937 in Old Town, the daughter of Jesse M. and Julia M. (Darling) Young. Velma worked at many places; shoe factories in Old Town, the telephone company in Bangor and Lane Construction Company as a weigh master, where she retired in 1998. She enjoyed many hobbies; quilting, cross stitching, painting, genealogy, scrap booking as well as writing a book on family life (Forever Young). Her and her sisters made many quilts to help many people in need over the years. She is survived by her husband, John H. Mayhew; one special daughter and best friend, Julie and her husband Richard Doucette; her sons, Tim Sanborn and his wife Christy and Jesse Sanborn and wife Mindy; two daughter-in-law's, Laurie Sanborn and Peggy Sanborn; three sisters, Avis Ewer, twin sister Dea and husband Wayne Collins and Nina Hadley; her brother, Donald and wife Jan Young and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by the father of her children, Franklin Sanborn Sr.; her second husband, Edward (Bill Murray); her grandson Anthony Doucette; sisters, Helen Ewer and her husband Lawrence, Charlotte Curtis, Beatrice Page, Irma Parent and Hester Labree; one brother, Milton Young; her sons, Franklin Sanborn Jr., Rodney Sanborn and Roger Sanborn. Velma was a faithful member of Neally's Corner Church. Friends and family may call on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, from 12-2PM at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, ME. At 2PM a Celebration of Velma's life will take place at the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring at Cedarvale Cemetery in Argyle.
