In Loving Memory of Theodore “Dana” Mitchell
Theodore “Dana” Mitchell, a proud citizen of the Penobscot Nation, passed surrounded by the love of family, community, and the values that guided his life. Born in 1941 on Indian Island, Maine, Dana was born into the Bear Clan and raised by his parents, Eleanor “Lena” Mitchell and Theodore Norris Mitchell. He grew up on the ancestral homelands of the Penobscot people alongside his thirteen brothers and sisters.
Growing up on the reservation, Dana experienced both the strength of Native culture, family, and community as well as the challenges of limited opportunities. Determined to build a strong future, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1960. Following Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, he completed specialized training as a Radar Specialist at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi. During his military service, Dana traveled throughout the world, often sharing fond memories of his time in Greenland. He honorably served his country until 1964, when he completed his service as a Senior Airman at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine.
Following his military service, Dana built a successful career in electrical engineering and later worked in the iron trades before returning home to the Penobscot Nation. Throughout his life, he was known as a hardworking provider, a devoted family man, and a person who led with integrity and determination.
Dana found great joy in the traditions of his homeland and the outdoors. He loved hunting and spending time in the woods, embracing the connection to the land that had been passed down through generations of Penobscot people. He also cherished the annual tradition of picking fiddleheads along the riverbanks, a time that brought together family, culture, and the rhythms of the seasons. These moments on the land were among his greatest pleasures and reflected his deep respect for the natural world.
Dana's greatest pride was his family. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Lisa Mitchell, Carla Knapp and husband Joe Knapp, Alexa “Lexi” Mitchell, and Emma Trabulsie; his seven grandchildren; and his four great-grandchildren. His love, guidance, and unwavering support will continue to live on through each of them.
A lifelong advocate for Tribal sovereignty, self-governance, and self-determination, Dana believed deeply in the rights of Tribal Nations to preserve their cultures, govern their communities, and determine their own futures. He remained steadfast in defending treaty rights throughout his life, carrying forward a commitment to justice and healing for future generations.
Dana will be remembered for his service to his country, his dedication to his Nation, his devotion to his family, and his enduring belief that Native people must always stand strong in protecting their culture, lands, and rights. His legacy of courage, resilience, and love will live on in all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
"A life well lived leaves footprints that time cannot erase. Dana's spirit will remain in the hearts of his family, the Penobscot Nation, and all who were touched by his wisdom, strength, and kindness."
Graveside services and burial will be held at 2:00 PM at the Mitchell Family Cemetery, 18 Oak Hill, Indian Island, Maine 04468.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Penobscot Nation Boys & Girls Club or The Penobscot Nation CISM Team.
