Rita Cecelia (Willett) McGlinchey
April 22nd, 1930 – April 6th, 2025
Rita Cecelia (Willett) McGlinchey passed away peacefully in her home at Pushaw Lake on April 6th, 2025. She was two weeks shy of her 95th birthday and lovingly referred to as Mimi by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other members of the community. She is the daughter of Francis A. Willett Sr. and Flora E. (Perry) Willett of Great Works (Old Town), Maine. She was born in Old Town, Maine and attended St. Joseph Parochial Grade School. She graduated from John Bapst High School in Bangor, Maine in 1948. Mimi was raised with a strong faith and belief through the Catholic Church.
After graduation she worked in the office at O.G. Morin in Old Town, Maine where she met the love of her life, Sherwood "Bud" S. McGlinchey (Papa) in 1950. He later told her that on the day he met her he told himself that he was "going to marry that girl because she was the most lady like woman in the world and he wanted his future daughters to be ladylike like her.". They were married on September 19th, 1950, and were together for 59 years.
Together they had six children: Michael, Valerie, Christine, Patrick, Dawn and Cynthia. When her youngest was in grade school, Mimi went to work at Spruce's Store in Milford. She enjoyed helping out at the schools and became a substitute teacher. She was very involved in her children's school activities, including field trips. Mimi loved to learn new things, she and a dear friend took a few classes at the University of Maine at Orono. In 1969 Mimi went to work at the University of Maine- Orono Cooperative Extension (4-H) in the Maples building as a secretary. She proudly worked there for 16 years until her retirement in 1985.
Mimi was very active with the Daughters of Isabella and the Women's Auxiliary. She also participated with The Red Hat Society, TOPS of Milford and had been an active member of the Eastern Star. She loved camping, even in a tent with all six children, and traveling. Mimi and Papa traveled to: Ireland, France, Holland and Germany as well as other countries. She enjoyed traveling inside the United States as well and up to Prince Edward Island, Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre in Quebec as well as other Canadian locations. Mimi enjoyed snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, dancing, concerts, plays/theater and doing word searches. An avid watcher of Days of our Lives, she loved reading the Soap Opera Digest. She always enjoyed knitting and crocheting and taught others how to as well.
She participated with St. Joseph Church (Holy Family Parish) craft fairs, many babies have worn the sweater sets, hats and mittens that she has made. She and Papa lived in Milford until 1989 when their Pushaw Camp was converted into a year-round home. She found peace in the beautiful sunsets at Pushaw.
Mimi had a passion for cooking and baking and spent a lot of her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, teaching them. She always enjoyed having her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren around.
Mimi was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband Sherwood "Bud" McGlinchey, her brothers Albert Willett and Robert Willett, her daughter Dawn Marie (McGlinchey) Knipple, her grandson Jeremy McGlinchey and her great-great-granddaughter Fiona Flynn. She is survived by her children: Michael (Lori) McGlinchey, Valerie (Jerry) Herrick, Christine McGlinchey, Patrick McGlinchey (Karin Lundgren), and Cynthia (Larry) McGlinchey-Lunt. She was also lovingly known as Mimi to many children including her 16 surviving grandchildren: Melanie, Kacie, Jamie, Jennifer, Leslie, Darren, Adam, Meghan Kathleene, Justin, Nicholas, Jeremiah, Kristen, Sarah, Erin Frances, Chester and Cyril. Rita has 24 great-grandchildren: Henri, Naomi, Corwin, Shaeleigh, Aralynn, Kayla, Hayley, Zachary, Gabrielle, Alexis, Cody, Grace, Charlie, Evelyn Mae, Charlotte Kathleene, William, Taylor, Sage, Penelope, Anabelle, Juliette Cecelia (named after Mimi), a beautiful baby due in May, George and August. Rita is also survived by her 4 great-great-grandchildren: Annabella, Tyler, Laney and Elliott.
Mimi also had many nieces, nephews and cousins. She loved many and was loved back by even more. She was a very stylish and beautiful lady inside and out. Mimi was a daughter, wife, mother, sister, cousin, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, friend and role model.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Pastoral staff at Holy Family Parish, Helen Hunt Health Care, Northern Light Cardiology, Center Well Home Health, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, Northern Light Palliative Care Support and Northern Light Hospice who all played a part in her journey.

Family and friends will gather 5-7PM Thursday April 10, 2025 at Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St. Old Town. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11AM Friday at Parish of the Resurrection, Holy Family Church, Old Town. Immediately following the funeral mass all are invited to a Celebration of Life Reception in the Parish Hall. A graveside service will be held later in the summer of 2025.
