Richard A. "Dick" Moreau, 84, of Veazie, died at home on April 27, 2024, from complications of cancer. He was born in Portland, son of Arthur J. Moreau and Jeanette (Smith) Moreau.
Dick's career as an educator began upon his graduation from Gorham State Teachers College in 1960. He taught for two years in South Berwick before joining the Peace Corps in 1962 for an assignment at the Asmara, Ethiopia Teachers School, where he spent another two years. He then started graduate studies in biology, and spent two summers as an assistant for a Peace Corps Ethiopia training program, where he met his future wife.
He taught science at Timberlane High School in Plaistow, New Hampshire, held a joint appointment with Mount Allison and Sackville High School in New Brunswick, Canada, and was assistant principal and then principal at the newly created Tantramar Regional High School in Sackville, New Brunswick.
For four years, he served as superintendent of schools in Rexton, New Brunswick, and then returned to Maine to pursue graduate studies in education at the University of Maine at Orono. In 1988 he was hired as superintendent in the Orono-Veazie school district, where he served until 1994. He was then director of schools for the Maine Department of Education, office of Education in Unorganized Territory until 2007, when he retired.
He was a member and board member of the National Rural Education Association and of Orono-Old Town Kiwanis, serving as president in 1998. He loved fly fishing, especially in New Brunswick and Québec, and was an avid hunter, spending many hours in the woods bird, deer, and moose hunting with his son and friends.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Peter, John, and James.
Dick is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary (Higgins) Moreau, son David (Heidi Doyle), daughter Anne (John Connolly), grandson Cameron J.
(Ashlien Brown), granddaughter Brianna Welch and several nieces and nephews. With affection he is remembered by Apolonia, Layla, and Chris of the Philippines.
