Obituary

Pamela Wells, 66, of Old Town, Maine, passed away on June 22nd at her home, surrounded by the love of her family and her pets. Pam was finally taken from us after a hard-fought courageous 5 year journey with primary progressive aphasia. Born in Bangor on October 30, 1958, Pam was a woman of extraordinary depth—fiercely intelligent, endlessly creative, and profoundly compassionate. She was predeceased by her mother, Sandra L. Fowler, and is survived by her husband, Bryan Wells; her sister, Robin Fowler Pratt, and Robin's wife, Corry Pratt; her father, Edward W. Fowler; her loyal companions, dog Rosie and cat Eva; and countless friends, students, and admirers of her life's work. A 1977 summa cum laude graduate of Bangor High School, Pam was a lifelong learner whose deep commitment to education and service led her to the University of Maine in Orono, where she earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology and English, followed by a Master of Social Work. Later, she pursued additional studies in forestry, a lifelong passion rooted in her childhood. She spent 26 years as a compassionate social worker, bringing comfort and advocacy to others, and later expanded her talents as a gifted graphic designer. Her professional life was matched by a rich personal devotion to the natural world—she was an avid wildlife photographer, musician, writer, and the devoted steward of her 1,100-acre Wells Forest, which she and her husband Bryan managed with extraordinary care and vision. Pam loved working in her forest with her collection of Stihl chainsaws and shared these skills with many women who she trained in caring for their land. She spent countless hours in the forest photographing wildlife with stunning clarity and tenderness. Pam's work was featured in numerous publications, including magazines, newspapers, and conservation journals. Pam's generosity extended far beyond the forest's edge—including a gift to Darren McMullen of her grandfather's 1929 Gibson banjo, which continues to inspire new music and stories for future generations. Pam often shared that her most sacred role was that of a big sister. From the time she was just five years old, she cared for her younger sister Robin—a bond that remained steadfast and unbreakable throughout their lives. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Pam's dear friends, Mary and Carol, whose devoted companionship brought light and joy to Pam's final years. Their many walks, swims, and shared meals—often with Pam's beloved dog Rosie by her side—were a steady source of comfort, dignity, and laughter during a difficult time. Their friendship was a true gift. We are deeply grateful to St. Joseph's Hospice and to health aide Jenna, whose kindness and care brought comfort during this time. Pam Wells leaves behind a legacy of strength, artistry, deep wisdom, and love. She will never be forgotten. In leu of flowers, donations may be made to: Maine Youth Fish & Game Association P.O.
