Obituary

Norman Sherwood Hesseltine, Jr, 90, of Milford, passed peacefully in his sleep on January 5, at the Veterans Home in Bangor. Norman was born on April 7, 1935 to Norman S. Hesseltine, Sr and Jessie Reed Hesseltine on the Call Rd in Milford. At age 9, he moved in with his grandparents, Chris and Stella Reed, also on the Call Rd and lived with them until he was 17. He attended Old Town High School and then joined the Navy. During his 3 years in the Navy, he participated in an around-the-world tour aboard the Naval Destroyer USS Forrest Royal. He was proud that many in the family followed his service to country and proudly served in the Armed Services. After leaving the Navy, he worked as an electrician for his Uncle James Reed in the Old Town/Bangor area. His next employment was with the Dole Electric Company in Bangor, where he quickly became a foreman and supervised jobs throughout the state of Maine. He was most proud of having not only supervised all of the electrical work in the construction of the Kittery Bridge between NH and Maine, but also having been the person to backpack the giant red/green lights (that sit atop the bridge) on his back by climbing up the outside steel beams. After leaving the Dole Co, he proudly accepted the position of Director of Engineering at EMMC in Bangor, where he worked until his retirement in 2000. Many of the buildings and infrastructure that we see today are a result of his efforts. From the 1970's and the 2000's, he also worked as the Electrical Inspector for the City of Old Town, and was fortunate enough to enter many of the homes in Old Town and meet their inhabitants. Throughout most of his adult life, he was an active parishioner of Parish of the Resurrection, Holy Family Church (formerly St. Joseph's Church) and a member of the Knights of Columbus, active in its Old Town bowling league and attending many of their dances with his wife Helen. On May 10, 1958, Norman married Constance Helen Boucher. Together, they raised 4 children on Rasle St. in Old Town. Their first child, Linda, died at birth. Then came Steven, Ann, Scott, and Wendy. He ensured that throughout their childhoods they were loved, provided for, and exposed to as many happy outdoor activities as possible. Because he had lived a great deal of his life fishing on Nicatous Lake and staying with his Uncle Jake on Dollar Island , he ensured his children had many happy memories of doing the same. Although the greatest love of his life was his wife and children, hunting and fishing were not far behind. He often bragged that he had shot 55 deer, but that number changed often. He owned many fishing boats throughout his life and put them on the water as often as possible. He also enjoyed camping, canoeing, and ice fishing. He had many stories to tell of flying from Old Town to Mt. Katahdin and back in his son Scott's personal airplane. He would want to acknowledge some of his closest friends that he spent time in the outdoors fishing and hunting with: Raymond Paradis, Glenn Henderson, Ronnie Pelletier and neighbors Eddie Doucette and Jimmy Vaillancourt. His final trip to Nicatous was earlier this spring accompanied by all of his children. Norman was predeceased by his parents, Norman Hesseltine, Sr and Jessie (Reed) Roberson, a sister Linda, and a special sister-in-law Brenda Hesseltine and infant daughter Linda. He is survived by his wife Helen C.
