Michael Louis Messier died unexpectedly on July 19th, 2025 while enjoying a hike in his beloved Maine Outdoors. He was 62.
Mike was born in Bangor, Maine and graduated in 1981 from Old Town High School. He then joined the United States Air Force in 1982. He served until 1992 as an avionic systems technician keeping F-15 fighter jets flying in Arizona, Amsterdam, Iceland, Virginia, and during Operation Desert Storm. Mike was currently employed at the University of Maine in the steam plant where he worked as a mechanic in a challenging and busy environment. If you knew Mike, then you know that he was happy when maintaining things and did quality work.
Mike was a humble yet outgoing man who took pride in his work and interests. He was known by all as a can-do person who made the time to maintain relationships and help those in need. He was always taking on a "little project" for someone and if you were lucky enough to work with him on any such project then you know he was great company and a natural teacher. If you caught him around a campfire then you know he preferred to "pick your brain" and really get to know you through deep conversation. Mike enjoyed spending time at Madagascal Pond where he enjoyed fishing, stargazing, and cooking delicious dishes.
He is survived by his mother Gloria, sisters Nance, Patti, and Debbe (John), as well as his nephews and niece Matt (Amanda), Ashley (Dan), and Seth (Kim), and great-nieces/nephews Bristol, Boden, Michael, Brooklyn, Quinn, Beckham, Berkley, Lien, and Jade. He is predeceased by his father Clayton "Louie" Messier and great-niece Harper.
Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at St. Joseph Cemetery, Old Town on Saturday, July 26th at 11:00am. A celebration of life will be held from 1:00pm-5:00pm on Saturday, July 26th at 370 Main Road , Milford, ME 04461.
The family wishes to thank Mike's friend Nicole and the agencies involved in recovery: Maine Warden Service, Weld Fire FD, Mt. Blue State Park staff, Franklin Search and Rescue (FASAR), North Star Maine Health EMS, and the group of civilian hikers who also assisted.
