Feero

Obituary

Old Town - Lyman Beecher Feero passed away on November 20, 2024, at his home in Old Town, Maine. He was born on August 21, 1941, in the upstairs bedroom of the family homestead in Alton, Maine, to Harry and Doris (Smith) Feero. Lyman was a graduate of Old Town High School, class of 1959. He was an award winning cross country runner who preferred to run through the woods than around a track. He served in the Army as a nuclear weapons technician and upon his return attended the University of Maine. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology and began working for Sewall Company in Old Town as a surveyor, eventually becoming a mapping technician. When he went to work for Great Northern Paper in Millinocket, Maine, he was the first wildlife biologist to be hired by a major paper company. Lyman believed that paper companies were more than capable of managing their lands for animal species with targeted harvesting and establishment of deer wintering areas. Lyman's focus was mainly on the management of white-tailed deer. His efforts over the years earned him an Award of Meritorious Service from the Wildlife Society. His work was his way of working within the paper industry to protect wildlife by improving logging standards. His love for the outdoors expressed itself out of the office as well. His love for gardening, both vegetable and flowers, resulted in expansive gardens on the property. His love of the soil was reciprocated by thriving rosebushes, peonies and azaleas. Muddy knees and dirt beneath his fingernails was when he experienced his joy. The only thing more precious than a hosta was his beloved University of Maine Black Bears sports teams, especially hockey. A proud alum he never missed a game. He claimed he bled blue whether he actually did or not. Go Blue! Whereas his professional life and hobbies brought him joy, it paled in comparison to the love he felt for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His pride in them showed in his eyes when he talked about their accomplishments. He was devoted and doted on his family. Lyman was predeceased by his parents, an infant brother and his wife of fifty-one years, Rosalita (Rogers) Feero. He is survived by his daughter, Aimee (Roger) Medlin of Draper, Virginia, his son Lyman (Janeen) Feero Jr. of Old Town, and his sister-in-law, Irene (Walter) Chase of Medway. He is survived by eleven grandchildren; Joshua (Erika) Medlin, Samuel (Lauren) Maze, Michael Medlin, Anna Medlin, Lillia Medlin, Nicole Medlin, Eva Medlin, Emily Medlin, Mathew Medlin, Keegan Feero, and Nicholas Feero. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren; River Maze and Iley Medlin. A celebration of his life is planned for Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Birmingham Funeral Home, Old Town, from 4 - 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alfond Scholarship Fund in his name, online at https://umaine.edu/alfondfund/ under the link for giving in the banner.
