Lorraine Marie (Martin) Griffin died peacefully at home on February 16, 2025. Lorraine was born August 4, 1931, in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of Paul and Imelda (Fournier) Martin.
Lorraine grew up in Bangor, attending Catholic schools and graduating from John Bapst High School in 1949. She went on to graduate from the College of Our Lady of Mercy (now St. Joseph's College) in 1953. Following graduation, Lorraine taught high school in Fort Kent, Maine. There she met a fellow teacher, Lawrence Griffin, and fell in love. They married on June 29, 1956. Larry and Lorraine grew their family quickly – Lorraine gave birth to their first child in May 1957 and their seventh in March 1964. They moved from Fort Kent, to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Orono, and finally settled in Old Town in 1961.
In her childhood, Lorraine developed a lifelong love of learning. She fondly remembered the nuns leading her third-grade class to the Bangor Public Library, where she obtained her first library card and found a new world of books to feed her curiosity. She also developed a deep love of nature and the outdoors when she and her brother spent a free-spirited summer exploring the woods while her father ran a lumber camp in Kokadjo.
Although no one kept track of how many diapers Lorraine changed, how many loads of laundry she did, or how stressed out she was whenever her kids ran loose on the rocks at Schoodic Point, raising seven children born within seven years of each other was no small feat. To appreciate the magnitude of her accomplishment, one only need consider that all seven of her children were teenagers at the same time – for two months if counting by age and much longer if counting by mood swings. Managing her family required grit, skill, too much self-sacrifice, and an abiding love.
Lorraine's life was rooted in her faith. She was an active member in her church and valued the many friendships she made there. For many years she led a team of her fellow parishioners in preparing adults for initiation into the Catholic Church. She loved working with this team, the new parishioners she met, and their shared process of exploring faith and meaning through Catholic teachings.
Lorraine's love was quiet – lived rather than spoken – and shared with many, including her grandchildren and her three adopted "Number Eights." With her grandchildren in particular she gave and received much joy from sharing her curiosity about the world and her love of history, language, nature, cooking, knitting, sewing and much more.
Lorraine is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother Paul Martin and his wife Betty, her sister Joan Martin, and her son-in-law, Early Cooper. She is survived by her sister Janet Cammack and brother-in-law Walter Cammack of Brewer; her seven children: Mary Griffin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Joseph Griffin of Portland; Cathy Griffin of Old Town; Paul Griffin of Portland; Eileen Griffin and her husband, Carter Friend of Portland and their son, Connor Friend; Michael Griffin and his wife Tamara of Wayland, Massachusetts and their children Keely Griffin, Marlee Griffin, Melina Wales and her husband Ethan, and Day Kolz; and Patty Griffin, of Austin, Texas; and a niece and five nephews.
Lorraine's family would like to express their gratitude for the kindness and skill of the medical professionals who helped her maintain a vibrant and active life in her later years, and particularly, Lorraine's daughter Cathy whose unceasing care, attention and resourcefulness made all the difference.
