OLD TOWN - Kenneth Harland Kimball, 68, passed October 6, 2018, after a hard-fought battle with cancer and other health issues. He was born June 8, 1950 in Old Town, the son of Harold and Agnes (Chesley) Kimball.
Ken grew up in Old Town and graduated from Old Town High School in 1968. He spent time in Connecticut, working for Union Carbide before returning to Old Town to continue his education. He received an associate degree in business from Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and then attended Husson College. During those years at school, Ken dated and married his soul mate, Pam Avery.
Ken worked for the Old Town Paper Mill for close to 40 years in various positions. He was a former member of the Old Town Jaycees and, for many years, a very active member of the Old Town Elks Lodge #1284 holding several positions. He truly enjoyed spending a few hours just sitting around at "The Club", having a beer, and chatting with the other members and friends. He was also a member of the VFW Men's Auxiliary.
In his younger years, he played in a men's softball league and was also active coaching Farm League and Little League while his son played baseball. Ken was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. If a game was on, you better not interrupt him! Feel free to wear a team shirt and/or cap to the gathering. It's what he would like!
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Malcolm, Elwood, Vinal, and Dale; and sisters, Donna, Joyce, Linda, Althea Keene, and Carol Jean Davis.
Ken is survived by his wife and best friend, Pam (Avery) Kimball; son, Jeffrey Kimball; his granddaughters, Ryleigh Kimball and Tori Tuzzolino, and their mother, Jessica Tuzzolino of Bangor; his sister, Beverly Free of Orono; sisters-in-law, Nona Kimball of Wallingford, CT, and Elizabeth Kimball of Milford; father-in-law, Francis Avery Sr. of Old Town; brothers-in-law, Michael (Peggy) Avery and Francis (Brenda) Avery of Milford, Robin (Judy) Avery of Orono, Gary (Dianne) Avery of Old Town; sister-in-law, Rosemary Simpson of Tolland, CT; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
We are so thankful for the exceptional care Ken received from his oncologists, Dr. Pita and Dr. Harb, and the caring staff at Lafayette Cancer Center in Brewer. He always gave them a "run for their money" and teased them unmercifully! We would especially like to thank Janice and Donna from the Bangor Area Visiting Nurses Home Health Hospice for their compassion and attention to every detail of Ken's care - both medical and emotional. We couldn't have asked for better people to hold our hands through this process. We also want to thank the hospice social workers, Ann and Trisha; nurse, Cindy; and volunteer, Jim. Also taking care of Ken over the years were his primary care physicians, Dr. Christopher Ritter and most recently, Nicole Smith-Sanderland. Heartfelt thanks to the many family and friends who offered their assistance throughout his days of declining health.
A celebration of life will be held at Birmingham Funeral Home on Saturday, October 13th from 12-3 p.m. Committal will follow at the Lawndale Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to the Old Town Elks Lodge from 4 -7 p.m. for refreshments and continued conversations, and to share a toast to celebrate Ken's life.
