Kahlan Attean Newsom, 25, passed away unexpectedly in a car accident on July 9th, 2025. She was born May 1, 2000.
Kahlan was a citizen of the Penobscot Nation and a gift to the world with unending compassion and kindness for others. Kahlan was an alum of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics, the Wabanaki Youth in Science program, and was attending the University of Maine, majoring in New Media with a minor in Graphic Design where her strong intellect blended well with her creativity. Kahlan also worked part-time at the Penobscot Nation Finance Office and she loved being part of the Finance Office team. Kahlan was known for her deep love of animals and she routinely put her pet's needs before her own. She was a strong advocate for animal rights, environmental protection, and global human rights with endless potential to make positive change in the world. Kahlan's life had such promise and her untimely death wounds the hearts of her family, friends, the Penobscot Nation community and family pets Fergie and Weston.
Kahlan is survived by parents Bonnie and Lester Newsom, brother and sister-in-law Matthew Newsom and Anne Campbell, sister Hollie Newsom, sister Tabitha Newsom and her fiancée Kaleb Webber, nephews Franklin and Stanley Newsom and Bellamy Webber. In addition, she is survived by lifelong best friends Sarah Fields and Tia LeBretton, her second set of parents Vivian Barlow and Mark Fields; Aunt and Uncle Kelly and Craig Falardeau, Uncle Dale Newsom and his wife Anne, Uncle Doug Newsom and his wife Elaine, cousins Tori Gonyer and husband Hunter, Kerri Falardeau, Bane Slocum, and Matana Slocum, extended family members Martha, Jason and Maggie Campbell.
Kahlan is also survived by an extended circle of Johnson family relatives including Nicole, Ken, Kristin, and Katrina and their families.
She was predeceased by Grandparents Donald Parker, Leona Parker, Geraldine Newsom, Lee Newsom, Uncle Dean Parker, and Grandmother Ruth Johnson.
A celebration of Life Gathering will be held 2-4PM with remembrances being shared at 4PM Wednesday July 16, 2025 at Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St Old Town. Burial will be at Tribal Cemetery, Indian Island.
