Obituary

Janice Marie Francis, of Indian Island, Maine, 59 passed away surrounded by her family at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center on April 11, 2023. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on February 23, 1964, the daughter of Janice "Rene" Attean and William McDougall. Janice grew up in Bridgeport, and was a member of the Aquabelles synchronized swim team. She later moved to Indian Island with her mother, father and siblings. She played softball and her father was her coach. She was a stay at home mother of 6 children. Not only did she raise them to become amazing adults, she taught them to be proud Native people. Passing down centuries of Native American history, culture and arts. She enjoyed attending their numerous sporting events, where she was always the loudest in the crowd cheering for her babies. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. She was so proud of each and everyone of them and never missed a time to tell them so. During the summer, she was a blueberry harvester and taught her children to harvest them as well. She met many friends on the barrons, many so close, she considered them family. As her children grew older, she returned to work in various occupations as a seamstress, sales associate, and more seasonal positions. After completing her GED, Janice attended Institute of American Indian Arts in 2006. Being an honor student and pursuing her goals after her children were grown. She was unable to complete her degree but made it her life's mission to ensure Native history was known. Janice was a lover of the arts. She enjoyed crafts, beading, music and making traditional regalia. She made all of her children's regalia that were eventually passed down to her grandchildren. She was well known for her beadwork, and has pieces at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC. She passed down her love of music, beadwork, and making of traditional regalia to her children. Her greatest times were spent with her children, grandchildren and close family/friends. Janice was predeceased by her parents, grandparents Eunice Crowley and Elmer Attean, Maternal Uncles Brian, Leroy, and Gary. Paternal Uncle Eddie. Maternal Aunts Priscilla, Sharon and Alice, In-laws; Rebecca "Mammo" and Daniel Francis, Brother in-laws; Caroll "Coff" and Leonard "Itch" Francis, grandson U-neeq and godfather Thomas Tottingham "Uncle Tom." Surviving is the love of her life and father of her children Dean Francis. Six children, Domekin and wife Tammy, Dina and fiance Julian, Dana, Dustin, Jasmine and husband Kinap and Dan and companion Monica. Grandchildren, Charissa, Cade, Tiara, Keyahnu, Darius, Isaiah, Addison, Logan, Lakeysha, Tyeisha, Tainesha, Taykwon, Kearah, Quinton, Briseis, Dustin Jr, Xavier, Poniwsis, Aurora, Alan, John, Aisha, Jakob, Colby, Wyatt and Caleb. Great Grandchild Kolbeigh "Bee." Godchildren Meaghan Lewey and Devin Hall. An Aunt, Ruth. Siblings; Phillip, Billy, Teri and husband Dan, and Scott. Special niece Taletha and nephew Seneca and best friend since childhood, Adrian Love and her children Saul, Amber and Adam, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
