Old Town: James E. "Jim" Cowan, 90, passed away on Sep 6, 2025. He was born Aug 11, 1935 in Old Town to Charles E. and Evangeline (Bouchard) Cowan.
Jim graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1953, and the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Government in 1958, a Master's degree in Education in 1963 and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Superintendency in 1974. He began his education career as a principal of Pembroke Consolidated School, later becoming the Elementary Supervising Principal in Fort Fairfield and then became the Superintendent of Schools for Fort Fairfield (SAD #20), a position he served for 17 years. He married the love of his life, Frances (Fran) Harvey in 1959, and welcomed his two children Christopher and Sheila while in Fort Fairfield. When he retired and returned to Old Town, he rounded out his education career as a supervising student teacher for the University of Maine and served as interim Superintendent of Milford (SAD #90) in the early 90's.
Jim was active in his communities in Rotary Club, where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow, as a member of the board of directors of Fort Fairfield Community General Hospital, as commissioner of the Old Town Housing Authority and board of directors of Old Town Residential Service. He was also active in his churches, St. Dennis in Fort Fairfield as chairman of the finance committee and chairman of the renovation committee which was instrumental in uniting St. Joseph and St. Mary Parishes in Old Town into the Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord. Jim was an avid fan of New England sports.
Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his loving wife Fran of 47 years, his daughter Sheila Rogers, his grandson Sean Rogers and his brother John Cowan.
He is survived by his son, Christopher (Suzette) Cowan of Round Rock, TX, his grandsons Chad Cowan of Round Rock, TX, Kevin Cowan (Seda) of San Antonio, TX and Nickolas Cowan of Richardson, TX. His legacy includes his great grandchildren, Leopold (Leo) and Daisy Cowan, both of San Antonio, TX. He is also survived by his brother, Lt Colonel (ret) Charles (Ed) Cowan (Clara) of Jacksonville, FL, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim is fondly remembered by his dear friends Harold (Whitey) White and Robert (Bob) Stanley.
There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10AM Tuesday October 14, 2025 at Parish of the Resurection of the Lord, Holy Family Church, Old Town. Burial will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town. Immediately following all services, all are invite to return to the Parish Hall for a light luncheon and continued fellowship.
