Old Town - Capt. Harlan R. Cust, 88, passed away peacefully December 14, 2024, with his loving family by his side. He was born May 16, 1936, son of Robert E. Cust and Gilberta M. Cust.
Harlan graduated from Old Town High School and then went on to Maine Maritime Academy where he graduated as an Officer for the U.S. Navy. He completed numerous tours all over the world and was the recipient of many medals, including the Bronze Star during his 30 years of service. Upon retiring from the Navy Harlan went to work for a Fleet Waste Management company in Florida for 12 years.
Harlan always enjoyed spending time with his children, their spouses, his six
grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Harlan also enjoyed playing tennis and golf with his family and friends. He sat on the City Council of Glenburn for many years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Old Town. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and person in general. Harlan was a very loving person and was always willing to offer advice and words of encouragement to all.
He is survived by his son Scott and his children, Scottie, Torrey and Emily of Virginia; his daughter Michele, son-in-law Jim and their children Wes and Chris of Maine; his daughter-in-law, Mendy and her son Daniel of Ohio; his cousin Alan and his wife Sue of Maine, and numerous nieces, nephews and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by Gloria, his companion of 10 years. Harlan is predeceased by his wife Carole of 54 years; his son, Robert; his parents, his sisters, Carolyn and Linda.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 20th at 11 a.m. at Parish of the Resurrection, Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town. Immediately following Mass, all are invited to the parish hall for a luncheon and continued fellowship. Interment will be at a later date at Lawndale Cemetery in Old Town.
