Gene Edward Abbott
Milford --Gene Edward Abbott died peacefully 10 days after his 91st birthday, January 24, 2025 at Maine Veterans Home. He was born January 14, 1934 in Old Town a son of Charles and Sylvia (Ashe) Abbott.
Gene was a 1953 graduate of Old Town High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Marine Corps reporting to Paris Island for his basic training. He became an airplane mechanic and served honorably for three years being discharged in 1956. Upon return to Old Town he was employed at the Penobscot Chemical Fiber mill in old town and then went to work for the University of Maine as a research technician in the chemical engineering department for over 30 years.
He loved hunting and fishing, playing horseshoes, family gatherings, playing golf and watching sports on TV. He was an avid woodworker, creating many projects in his basement workshop
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Janet (Baillargeon) Abbott; daughter Kristine St. Louis, and her husband William of Greenbush; siblings Betty (Abbott)Lynch of Lowell, Charlene (Abbott) McLaughlin and her husband Floyd of Orono and Bruce Abbott and his wife Jean of Greenbush, several nieces and nephews including four special nieces who were very close to their Uncle Gene; Lori King, Lisa Boucher, Staci McLaughlin, and Brandi-Jo Dunn. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers Chester "Sonny" Abbott and Ronald Abbott and a sister Carolyn Soule.
Friends may call 1-3pm and 6-8pm Tuesday January 28, 2025 at Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St Old Town. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10AM Wednesday at Parish of the Resurrection, Holy Family Church, Old Town. Spring burial with military honors will be conducted at St. Joseph Cemetery, Old Town.
