Obituary

BRADLEY – Gary Michael DeGrasse, 70, of Bradley, Maine passed away Sunday, July 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren following a brief illness. Gary was born June 8, 1954, in Old Town, Maine, the son of John "Jack" and Theresa (Lavoie) DeGrasse. He graduated from Old Town High School in 1972, and on September 1, 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Catherine, who he fondly referred to as "Cap." Gary possessed a hard work ethic, which he passed along to his children and they to their children. Gary worked numerous jobs during his high school years. Shortly after graduation, he took a position with Bangor Hydro Electric Company, and he progressed through the ranks, eventually earning Lineman 1st Class. In 1989, he was promoted to Assistant Line Superintendent and then to Line Superintendent of the Northern Division. In 2003, Gary founded Powerlines Construction, Inc., which he owned and operated until June 2019. It goes without saying that Gary made many lifelong friends during his years working line construction. These friends and the work he did everyday were a special part of his life and instrumental to what and who he was. Gary also owned and operated Hillside Apartments in Bradley since 1979. Gary was a generous person and enjoyed sharing and spending time with his many family members and friends, particularly at his home in Bradley and his camp on Chemo Pond, both of which he took great pride in meticulously maintaining. He also enjoyed spending time at the "deer camp" on Great Works Stream that he shared with his two sons, as well as following his children and grandchildren in all their sporting activities throughout the years. As his friends and family know, he was so proud of his three children and their accomplishments, and he loved hearing about all the achievements of his grandchildren, which are far too many to mention here. He was a bit of a bragger, rightly so! Gary was predeceased by his parents and grandparents; his brother, Bill and his wife Mary Ellen; and many special aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was also predeceased by who he would say was his best friend and biggest supporter, his father-in-law, Paul Buchanan, Sr. Gary is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Cathy; daughter, Jill and her husband Rob Gagner of Hampden; sons, Matthew and his wife Jessica, and Brian and his wife Erin, all of Bradley; granddaughters, Rilee and her husband Jack Barteaux, Alexis DeGrasse, and Mallory Walker; grandsons, Nicholas Himmelwright and his significant other Bayley Bryant, Jack DeGrasse, and Charles DeGrasse; sister, Paula and her husband, Wayne Oakes of Bradley; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Barteaux; niece, Janelle Oakes; special uncle, Lucien Lavoie; mother-in-law, Valerie Buchanan; and many special friends. A graveside service will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor, Maine on Tuesday July 30, 2024 at 11a.m. All attendees are encouraged to meet at the Superintendent's lodge. Donations in Gary's memory may be made to a charity of your choosing.
