Obituary

Alton – Frederick E. Seward, 80, passed away peacefully at the Togus VA Medical Center on January 22, 2026, surrounded by the gratitude of a nation he served and the love of a family he cherished. Born on November 20, 1945, in New Haven, Connecticut, to William H. Seward Sr. and Gertrude Seward (Hanson), Frederick lived a life defined by courage, devotion, and quiet kindness. He was a steady presence and a bright light in the lives of all who knew him. Frederick was a proudly decorated United States Army Veteran who served during the Vietnam War as a Private 4th Class Light Weapons Specialist. Drafted in 1965, he served overseas in Vietnam for 13 months with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade and the 25th Mechanized Division. His service was marked by extraordinary bravery. Frederick earned a Bronze Star for heroism after selflessly pulling injured soldiers away from a landmine blast, risking his own life to save others. After returning home, Frederick continued to serve his country with the Army Reserves for nearly another decade. Following his military service, Frederick worked for NESW in Southington, Connecticut, where he dedicated 22 years before retiring. After retirement, he and his beloved wife Susan moved to Maine, a place Frederick quickly grew to love. Though he was "from away," this former city boy fully embraced country life. Maine became his home in every sense, from quiet mornings to long afternoons spent outdoors, especially relaxing on the deck he loved so much. Frederick was happiest when surrounded by family. He was a proud and enthusiastic Grillmaster, always eager to cook for those he loved, and his meals were an extension of his generosity and warmth. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his loyalty, his steady presence, and the deep love he carried for his family. Frederick was predeceased by his parents and by the love of his life, Susan, whom he lost just before they would have celebrated 42 years of marriage. Their bond was enduring and profound, and his love for her remained unwavering. He is survived by his daughters, Cherlynn and Gina; his brother, William Jr.; his six grandchildren, Fallon, Ashley, Max, James, Laura, and RJ; and his seven great-grandchildren, JJ, Kayleigh, Arabella, Amelia, Jelia, Damonte, and Nora. He is also survived by his nephew John and his beloved cat, Spectre, who was a constant companion. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Vietnam War Memorial in Frederick's name, honoring his service and sacrifice. A celebration of Frederick's life will be held in the Spring; please reach out to the family for additional details.
