Milford - Fernald L. Curtis (Tinky), 93, of Milford passed away on January 7, 2025 at his home surrounded by his beloved wife and his loving family. He was born on August 27, 1931 in Milford, ME, son of Fernald and Althea (Dunn) Curtis. He is predeceased by both parents and his brother Walter Curtis.
At the age of 19, he was drafted in the army and was stationed in Germany. Tinky retired at the age of 54 from Diamond International where he was a forester and surveyor. This past August, Tinky and Bernice celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and was attended by their large family, extended family and friends.
He served as a Milford selectboard member and was instrumental in creating Chase Field at Dr. Lewis S. Libby School. He also built and developed Curtis Lane and Grove Street in Milford. Tinky also built and operated Curtis and Sons Lumber in Milford. Tinky was a cub scout leader for many years. He was a member of Parish of the Resurrection in Old Town and served as a greeter.
Upon his retirement, Tinky continued his love for the outdoors by hiking many mountains and trails including the Appalachian Trail often including his grandchildren. He ran a marathon. Tinky loved fishing and going to the Allagash with family and his special friend Charlie.
Family meant everything to Tinky. He has special nicknames for all his children. He had a deep passion to attend all sports events involving his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Tinky is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Bernice (Cote) Curtis: his eight children: Mark (Jeannie) Curtis, Cathy (Scott) Stengel, Wanda (Dan) Long, Scott (Sue) Curtis, Brenda Curtis (Randy), David (Renee) Curtis, Mary Padgett and Amy (Michael) DiGiovanni. His twelve grandchildren: Matt Curtis, Shannon Scopino, Nathan Curtis, Meghan Doucette, Shane Albert, Amber Westley, Nick Padgett, Justin Libby, Zac Libby, Ryan Stengel, Beth Stengel and Alexa Curtis and three step grandchildren: Laurie Gordon, Gina and Emily DiGiovanni.
Friends may call on Sunday, January 12, 2025, from 3-6PM at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, ME. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 10AM at Parish of the Resurrection of The Lord, Holy Family Parish, 429 Main St., Old Town, ME. Immediately following the service, all are invited to the Parish Hall for a light luncheon and continued fellowship. Spring burial with military honors will be conducted at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.
