Greenbush – Eleanor M. Crouch, 91, went home to be with The Lord on Monday June 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 7, 1934 in Exeter, NH a daughter of Harold and Madeline (Botsford) Whitney.
To say Eleanor lived a full life would be an understatement. Throughout her remarkable 91 years, she wore many hats, each with grace, devotion, and an unshakable sense of purpose. She pursued countless avenues to create a meaningful, vibrant life centered around love, service, and deep-rooted faith.
Firstly, she was a devoted wife to husband Dick for 67 years, where she was his right hand. Eleanor was oil keeping the machine running; the one working behind the scenes and always having her husband's back. Eleanor was also a mother to her 9 children and a motherly figure to her 12 younger siblings.
You could go to Eleanor for seemingly anything. Need a cake decorated for your wedding? She was there, an icing bag in hand and ready to go. A new baby coming? There was a beautiful quilt already laid out on the kitchen island waiting to be sewed. Her way with numbers was unlike anyone else's. If she sent you to the store, you better bet you came back with the exact change. Eleanor knew what it was supposed to be; tax included!
Eleanor was a dedicated woman who never stopped moving and was probably best known for her genealogy work and the pure fountain of knowledge she had regarding her town, the families within it, and the history of the local area. She successfully published seven novels spanning centuries, dating as far back to the 1300s.
Finally, Eleanor was a messenger of God. She was a member of the United Baptist Church in Old Town for as long as her children could remember. While being a member she did what she did best: become the boss. Eleanor helped organize the music; she participated in the choir and also typed out her husband's Sunday school lessons, so it was actually legible.
Eleanor was predeceased in death by her beloved husband Richard "Dick" Crouch Sr. of 67 years, three of their children, Richard Crouch Jr., David Crouch and Darlene Ezell; her sisters Barbara Perkins and Patty Normandin; brothers Harold "Sonny" Whitney, Stanley Whitney and Henry Whitney; three grandchildren, Shannon Laventure, Jeremy Matthews and Brian Berg; son-in-law, Rick Barasso; and daughter-in-law, Anita Crouch.
She is survived by 6 children, Sandra Laventure and husband Mark, Rhonda Bowen and husband Bob, Debbie Barasso, Billy Crouch and wife Sandra, Tammy Matthews and husband Jacques and Sherry DiCesare and husband Mark; siblings George Whitney, Nancy Huntley, Shirley Ostrander, Carol Droulin, Phillip Whitney, Linda Chase and Ronald Whitney; son-in-law, David Ezell; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Eleanor's life will take place Saturday June 21, 2025 at 11AM at The United Baptist Church, 86 Middle St., Old Town, Maine. Immediately following services, there will be a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be at 2PM at the Cardville Cemetery, Greenbush.
