Obituary

Greenbush, Maine - Dwight Anthony Sapiel, 79, left this world to join the ancestors at his home on May 25, 2025. He passed peacefully in his sleep with his daughter by his side. Dwight was born April 1, 1946, the son of Joseph Kenneth Sapiel, Sr. and Juanita Mary (Cote) Sapiel. Dwight was a proud member of the Penobscot Nation. He was happiest in a canoe or his boat. He knew every rock and island on the Penobscot River and loved spending time at his camp on Orson Island. He hunted, trapped, fished, and guided, and over the years shared many funny and wonderful stories about those times. He picked and sold fiddleheads for decades and had many loyal customers. Dwight honorably served his country in Vietnam from 1965 to 1967. Injuries incurred during his service in the Army led to PTSD which he bravely battled throughout his life. Dwight is survived, and will be greatly missed, by his daughter Jennifer (Sapiel) Neptune; former companion of 44 years Nancy Carson, and her children who he loved as his own, Jon Carson, Marisa Nadeau and her husband Joey, Jim Carson and his wife Allison, grandchildren Tia (Nadeau) Wilson, Taryn (Nadeau) Hall, Summer (Carson) Chase, Sierra (Carson) Eaton, and Nate Carson. He is also survived by siblings Leon Sapiel, Wayne Sapiel, Vickie (Sapiel) Bayles, Debbie (Sapiel) Hallett, Everett Sapiel, Jean (Sapiel) Collins, and James Sapiel. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews who he loved deeply and maintained very close personal connections with. Dwight was predeceased by his parents, brothers Joseph Sapiel III, Mike Sapiel, and Richard Sapiel. The kindness and care of neighbors Jacques and Tammy Matthews allowed Dwight to live out his final years in the home that he loved. Friends and family are invited to Birmingham Funeral Home, Old Town, on Sunday, June 1 at 10:00 am for a service celebrating Dwight's life, followed by internment of his ashes and military honors at the new cemetery at the head of Indian Island. Lunch to follow at the Penobscot Nation Museum in the new tribal administration building, Wabanaki Way, Indian Island. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org
