Obituary

Milford - Donald Albert Madden was born April 17, 1938. His parents were Imelda (Saindon) Madden and Claude H. Madden of Milford, Maine where Don lived his entire life, passing away peacefully at his home in Milford on January 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death less than a year ago by his wife of 65 years, Madeline (Lynn Desjardins) Madden whom he described as the "love of his life" – a life he lived with love, loyalty and laughter. Don was a 1956 graduate of Old Town High School. He went to work for Sewall Company and became a talented draftsman. He spent many years working for the Maine Department of Transportation, from which he retired before going to work part time for Penobscot County as the county road commissioner, which allowed him to travel all over the county talking with people, checking road conditions and looking in on favorite spots for hunting and fishing. He loved to hunt and fish with friends and family members. He was always known to appreciate a cold beer with two olives, not one, and be up for a game of cards, especially cribbage where given the chance he would deal the entire cribbage table 0 points. Don always had a ready joke, often not politically correct and believed that there was no harm in telling a joke. He loved to hang out with friends, old and new, at the Elks Club in Old Town. He taught us to celebrate the important things in life – how rich we were by the company we kept with one another and the satisfaction with what we have. Don was an excellent carpenter and handy with all tools, always renovating and updating his home to the present time. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving in many roles over the years, and at one point served as the Grand Knight for the Old Town Council #2537 and a term as State Deputy for the State of Maine Council, which allowed he and Lynn to travel the United States, meeting people all over the country. Don is survived by his children Lynn Madden (Scott Farnum) of New Haven, CT, Joanne Madden-Cutic (Andreas Cutic) of lower Austria, Eric Madden (Michele Madden) of Old Town; grandchildren Samuel Wood (Jillian Sarnacki-Wood), Lauren Holloway (Joseph Holloway), Patrick Fischer (Ina Fischer), Ashleigh McAlinden (Jake McAlinden), Zachary Madden (Chelle Madden), Katelynn Steinkellner (Clemens Steinkellner); great-grandchildren, Landon, Harper and Addison Holloway, Griffin and Hudson McAlinden, Willamina and Lucille Sarnacki-Wood, MacKenzie and Johnathan Madden, and Emily Fischer; his siblings Susan (Dick) Fitzgerald and Stephen Gagnon (Eleanor Macedonis) and pre-deceased by his brother, Richard Gagnon (Kathleen). He is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews and their families. The family wishes to thank the Visiting Angels, especially Tammy, who helped to make it possible for him to stay in his home, along with tremendous support from his loving family, most especially his local family members. A celebration of his life, loyalty and laughter will be held on Friday, February 7, 12-2 pm at Birmingham Funeral Home – the date marks the 66th anniversary of his marriage to Lynn - with a brief prayer service at 2 pm.
