Alton-David Moore, 78, passed away at his home in Alton on February 24, 2026 after a long illness.
David was born on March 28, 1947, the son of Melvin "Leon" and Rosella Moore. He grew up in Alton- an area he cherished and remained there throughout his life, even living in the very home where he was raised.
In 1964, David answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. He was also a longstanding member of the American Legion, maintaining a lifelong connection to his fellow veterans and his community.
David was an avid hunter and fisherman who found great joy in the outdoors. He treasured the time spent in the woods and on the water, especially when surrounded by family and friends. One memorable outing was a hunting trip with his son-in-law, John, where he successfully bagged a moose. That trophy remains proudly mounted in John's taxidermy shop to this day as a lasting reminder of that special trip.
He had a deep love for card games of every kind and spent countless hours at the table with his beloved wife of over 60 years, Thena. Whether hosting friends for an evening of laughter and friendly competition or playing a quiet game of solitaire on his own, cards were one of life's simple pleasures he never grew tired of.
David also enjoyed his television programs and kept a well-stocked collection of pre-recorded favorites. He was especially fond of westerns, action movies, and wrestling. His love of wrestling extended beyond the screen, as he proudly supported his granddaughter, cheering her on as she became a three-time Maine state champion.
David was predeceased by his parents, Melvin "Leon" and Rosella Moore, and by his brother, Tyrone "Sonny" Moore.
He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of love in his devoted wife, Thena Moore; his daughter, Shellee Dykstra and her husband John; his sons, David Moore Jr. and wife Darlene, Brent and wife Jenn, Adam and husband Peter, and Matthew and wife Amy. He was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, with two great-great-grandchildren expected this spring.
A private graveside service will be held by the family at a later date.
