Obituary

The oldest living citizen of Bradley, ME, Beatrice Wentworth (nee Sykes) died at her home on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, after a short illness. Beatrice (Bea) was born in Providence RI in early October 1930 to Brooke and Doris Sykes. She lived her early years in Barrington, before graduating from the high school there and going off to the University of Rhode Island in the fall of 1948. While she majored in Home Economics, she always liked to joke her real major was to find a husband - and she did. While at university, she met a young man from Tiverton RI named Charles (Chuck) Wentworth and married him in February 1953. The next year saw Chuck head off to Korea leaving her pregnant and alone. After giving birth to their son Mark, she bought a house in Barrington and waited for Chuck. When Chuck returned to the US., he got a job, they settled down and had their second child, a daughter Susan (Sue), in 1956. The young family moved from Rhode Island to Southern Massachusetts in 1960 and like many families of that era, Chuck worked and Bea raised the kids. The family moved to Stoughton MA c. 1962 and once her children were older, she went to work as a very successful and loved teacher's aide at Chemung Hill Elementary School. Ten years later, Chuck's job took them to Presque Isle, ME so the family again relocated. As a couple with older kids, Chuck and Bea had a wide range of friends and interests, including playing card games and square-dancing. Bea went to work as a job coach at the Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP),from which she retired twenty years later before the now empty nest couple moved to their new and final home in Bradley. Chuck and Bea were married for 55 years before he preceded her in death in July 2008. Bea adjusted to the new reality and busied herself with quilting and swimming at the YMCA in Old Town. She loved to travel and, along with Sue, took several Caribbean cruises and traveled together to Turkey over the years. While she slowed down as she reached her 90s, she nonetheless had a strong will to live and soon outlived most of her extended family and friends. In 2022, the Town of Bradley recognized her longevity as the oldest citizen of the town by awarding her the Historic Boston Post Cane. The Wentworth family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice at Home for her outstanding home care in the last year of her life, in particular, Lisa, Josh, Nicole and her home care volunteers Ann and Roanne. At the end, she wanted nothing more than to die at home, and it was only Sue's, her son Jonah's and Gentiva's care that made her wish possible. She is survived by her son Mark and daughter in law Deborah of Great Falls, VA and daughter Sue of Greenbush, five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She will be cremated and then united with her husband, the love of her life, where they will be interred together at Mt Hope Cemetery in Bangor in the spring.
