Obituary

Otis - Arthur "Butch" R. St. Peter of Otis, age 67, peacefully passed away February 19, 2019, with family members by his side. He was born August 24, 1951, in Old Town, the son of the late Rudolph St. Peter and Irma (Debien) St. Peter. Butch was a 1969 graduate of Old Town High School and Calhoon M.E.B.A. Engineering School class of 1977. He was employed as a Chief Engineer for Sea-land Service, Inc. until his retirement in 2000. He served in the United States Army in 1970 with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary St. Peter of Otis; by one daughter, Suzette Johnston and her husband Jason of Bangor; and grandchildren Bryce, Colby, and Kaylee; brother, George St. Peter of Old Town; sister, Theresa Michaud and her husband Gordon of Old Town; sister, Valerie Jamieson and her husband Steve of Old Town; many amazing and dear nieces and nephews; special best friends, Captain Glen Hinckley and his wife Dee of Wentworth, NH; their sons Daniel and Ryan Hinckley of Wentworth, NH; a special life-long friend Gary Furlotte and his wife Cindy of Bangor; and a very special mother-in-law, Corda LaFlamme of Old Town. Butch was a man who always took care of his family. He decided at the age of 18, to volunteer to go to Vietnam. He wanted to serve his country and had his mother become his dependent so he could help her out. He was proud to have been a veteran and this experience changed the course of his life. After his military service, he attended college at Calhoon in Maryland on the G.I Bill to become a Merchant Marine. Upon graduation, he was hired on by Sea-land Inc. and quickly worked his way up to become a chief engineer. At age 39, Butch was the youngest Chief Engineer assigned to one of ships that transported cargo all over the world. It is noted, he was licensed for both steam and diesel engines. Butch always commented about his life, that he had no regrets and that he did indeed live a good life. He was truly a self-made man, who started his life with humble beginnings on French Island. He was immensely proud to be a French Island boy and proud of his heritage. Whatever he did, he did it well and was a perfectionist for details. He retired in 2000 to live his life at his Shangri-La, Beech Hill Pond with in his words, "The sweetest girl on God's green Earth." Butch's happiest days were spent with his family at the lake. He was quick to instigate some fun. The grand kids loved Pepe's slide fest that happened every year in late winter. He actively participated careening down a hill laughing as loud as the kids. Butch got the idea to try different things to slide on too. He and Bryce made an epic ride down on a large carpet once, which he referred to as his "Magic carpet ride." Pepe showed the kids the finer points on how to go old school riding on pieces cardboard that poor kids did back in the day. One time, there wasn't enough snow, no matter. Butch rigged up the 4-wheeler to tow the whole gang on inner tubes over the lake. This is stuff that childhood memories are made of, with a grandfather like that. In the fall, he loved to take long buggy rides into the woods. Butch often suggested a fall ride to Mary so that she could enjoy her hobby of taking photographs. He was patient when she wanted to take yet another picture of a porcupine, commenting, "Don't you have enough yet?" laughing. Butch liked to play captain of his pontoon boat. His boat rides were the stuff dreams are made of. The tour included hours of just kicking back listening to classic rock and roll while drinking beer in the sunshine. Many times, he would pull into the beach for a dip, or better yet, swim on and off again all day in the middle of the lake. When Bryce was a boy, Pepe took him to the beach often to build sand castles for hours. Each one was well designed and had such names as Voodoo or Pirate Castle. Butch loved also hanging out in the garage. He taught his grandkids the finer art of BB shooting items such as cans and eggs. He enjoyed visiting friends there too, and even bought a restaurant grill so he could serve food there! He was a cat lover and adored his fur baby "Mittens" who got chubby from all of the extra treats her dad gave her. He had such a playful personality he could easily connect with children and those young at heart. Ordinary things could become fun with Pepe around. Left to remove a wasp nest, he showed the kids how to make a can of WD-40 into a flame thrower to burn that nest right off from the stairs. He also dragged a canoe down to the beach one day so that the kids could have fun trying to swamp it by tipping it back and forth wildly. Everyone had a ball all day with Butch right in the middle of the action. He had a sweet tooth for life and chocolate. He was so proud of his daughter Suzette and her family. Butch thought both she and her husband Jason were perfect parents and created a household that was a great place to kids to be raised in. Butch was especially close to his daughter and supported her emotionally in any endeavors she decided to try with the unconditional love of a caring father. Butch was totally in love with his wife and grateful for every single day they had together. He felt that his mother had something to do with finding him his soulmate. Butch was also a wonderful chef and really enjoyed being in the kitchen. He was often disappointed when he went out to eat because his cooking was superior. He loved doing outdoor cooking in the summer, often doing a huge lobster bake with clams for the family. Butch was extremely private about his life, as many of you know. Death didn't define him, his life did. Those who wish to may contribute to a charity of their choice in his name. A private burial will be held by the family at a later date.
