Obituary

Arthur Nagelin, Jr. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, Arthur Nagelin, Jr. who died of natural causes at his home in Greenfield on March 17, 2025. Born in Delaware in 1955 to Arthur and Lorraine Nagelin, he was raised in Bangor, Maine. Art was active in ROTC at Bangor High School and joined the US Navy upon graduation where he proudly served as a corpsman for four years. After serving, Art embarked on an epic adventure - trekking solo from Maine to California on his bicycle. He remained a cyclist for years and, becoming a bike aficionado, made a project of rebuilding many dozens of bikes and donating them to children in need. In addition to being a cyclist, Art was an avid hiker. He nearly completed the Appalachian Trail, making it all the way to New Hampshire before an injury forced him to abandon the journey. He met an eclectic assortment of characters and had no end of unforgettable experiences on these trips, and really, throughout his life. Art had an appreciation for all kinds of people which, combined with his compassionate nature, made him well suited for his twenty year career at the Bangor Mental Health Institute where he was known for treating everyone with kindness and respect. Art was always looking out for others and taking care of people, whether it was something simple like giving someone a ride into town to shop, or his selfless and expert care for our father at end-of-life. He always seemed to know just what to do, and was not one to panic if he didn't. Art was a self-sufficient individual who valued solitude and privacy, the kind of person who preferred living essentially off-the-grid as he did. To no one's surprise he was most at home in the woods of Maine, where he took daily long walkabouts with his beloved dog, Alice, thereby becoming something of a local fixture. There wasn't a plant in the woods that he didn't recognize and know how it might be used in natural healing, which was a focus of study for him later in life. While appreciating his peace and quiet, family was very important to Art, and he always enjoyed the annual gathering of extended family at our sister's mid-coast home, giving all a chance to come from near and far and spend precious time together. Art was predeceased by our parents, Arthur and Lorraine Nagelin. He is survived by his siblings and their spouses; Susan Watts (Randall), Andrew Nagelin (AnnMarie) and Elizabeth Nagelin-Anderson (Dagvin), and seven nieces (four of whom have spouses), and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Art was a kind-hearted, genuine, one-of-a-kind person and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to: Maine Paws for Veterans (https://www.mainepawsforveterans.org/) PO Box 516 Topsham, ME 04086-0516
